Friends: 10 Things That Would Be Different For The Main Characters Today!

While might still be one of the most popular television shows around, with the series  and binged by new fans, there are no doubt moments that have become dated. It can still able to be enjoyed now, but if it had actually been filmed today, life would be very different for the main characters.

There are elements that would never be the same, whether that is about the personalities of the characters, their jobs, or the environment that they live in. While it would potentially change the show drastically, it would be interesting to see how the series could be in a modern-day setting.

They'd Hang Out Less

One of the great elements of is how close the main group is. They spend so much time together, whether at Central Perk or in someone's apartment, simply wanting to hang out and talk about anything. It's obviously perfect for the show, but if it was set today, they'd certainly spend less time together.

With the growth of Zoom or WhatsApp, there are times when they would just communicate in that way, especially if they just had a quick question to ask each other.

They would obviously still hang out, but it would just be less frequent.

Chandler Vapes

Chandler Bing's addiction to smoking is a consistent element of the show, with panic and pressure making him smoke a lot. He fights against it a lot throughout the period when he smokes, but if the show was to take place today, he'd likely be doing that by vaping.

It's quickly becoming a popular method for smokers to take up, and it's easy to see how Chandler would end up doing that instead, with this being his way of getting out of smoking.

Plus the variety of flavors is something he'd likely make plenty of jokes out of.

They'd Hang Out At Starbucks

One major change that would likely take place if was set today is that . As nice as it is to have that in the show, the reality is that in a prime location such as that, this would likely be a Starbucks or another major brand.

While the gang might hang out there still, the reality is that the environment wouldn't be the same. It's unlikely a Starbucks would have a huge sofa just dumped in the middle for them to hang out on whenever they want, and reserving seats for themselves to come and go might not be an option either.

Hiring A Male Nanny

One of the big decisions that Ross and Rachel have to make in the show is hiring a nanny to look after Emma. They find the perfect nanny, but it just so happens to be a man, which Ross freaks out about. In the end, it becomes a huge deal about hiring him simply because of his gender.

If the show was filmed today, Ross and Rachel would likely hire him without hesitation. It's not an uncommon thing for a man to be in this position, and as long as they're up to the task, which he was, then there wouldn't be any problem this time around.

Rachel Wouldn't Lose Touch With Monica & Ross

In the , Rachel heads to find Monica, deciding she needs to reconnect with her after running out on her wedding day. The two have lost touch over the years, but they quickly pick up where they left off as high school best friends.

However, if the show was released today, the two of them would never have lost touch. With the power of social media, they would have remained friends over the years. Even if they stopped talking, they would still be able to see what the other was doing on a regular basis.

Ross Wouldn't Worry About Divorce

One of Ross Geller's biggest panics in is . It's something that causes a great deal of stress to him, which is why he doesn't want to end his drunken marriage to Rachel out of embarrassment.

While it's still not something that he would want to happen three times, there would be a lot less shame about the fact he had been divorced three times as it is something that has become a lot more common nowadays.

Rachel Would Need A University Degree

Seeing Rachel push her way into the fashion world is an incredible journey for her, which is something she should be proud of. It's a great part of her character, but in reality, just jumping would be unlikely nowadays.

The reality is that now, Rachel would likely need some form of University degree in order to get that job now, with much younger people who have that experience likely being ahead of her in the employment aspect.

They'd Live In Smaller Apartments

One big change that could come from the show is the actual apartments that they live in, particularly the main two. in a prime real estate area, and today they would likely cost an absolute fortune for them to own.

It's hard to believe, considering the jobs that the characters have, particularly early on in the series, that they'd be able to afford it. This is particularly true with Chandler and Joey, considering that Joey is often without work.

Phoebe Streaming Her Music

Phoebe loves to play the guitar and put on concerts, and while her songs are quirky and unique, she always entertains a crowd.

However, she never gets to play in front of huge audiences, often just whoever happens to be inside of Central Perk at the time.

However, with the growth of YouTube, TikTok, and other social media channels, it is easy to see how Phoebe might be able to become a viral sensation. Her interesting songs could end up being shared around which would drastically change her life.

Joey Would Be A Reality Star

Joey is often  but if the show was taking place today it's unlikely that would be the case.

Having appeared on a couple of successful shows, it would likely have given Joey a career for life with the popularity of reality television.

He's a big personality and someone who is very funny, which would make him perfect for a reality show, which often relies on actors who are in similar situations to Joey. It's easy to see how would have adapted that into the show, particularly with his character.
