Young Sheldon season 6, episode 12 finally confirmed Georgie's ludicrous story about Missy in The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon may be the titular character of the CBS comedy, but as it diversifies its storytelling, it has also started putting more focus on all members of the Cooper family, including the boy genius' siblings. Although it has been a while since Young Sheldon paired them up, it has found a way to finally show what Georgie truly meant when described Missy in an unflattering way during his The Big Bang Theory appearance.
Unlike his brothers who succeeded in their respective chosen fields, Missy had a pitiful life in The Big Bang Theory.
Time and again, Young Sheldon has highlighted how great Missy is as a character. Amid the onslaught of changes in their household following news of Georgie and Mandy's unexpected pregnancy, she kept the family together by providing all kinds of support for her struggling family members. Young Sheldon has even suggested that Missy is the smartest Cooper kid, so it's saddening to know that she won't reach her full potential. Despite all this, Georgie still described her sister as a "dumb teenager" in The Big Bang Theory—something that didn't quite feel accurate until Young Sheldon season 6, episode 12 where she starts her rebellious phase by lying to her parents.
In "A Frat Party, a Sleepover and the Mother of All Blisters Paige," Missy told her parents that she would be sleeping over at Heather's but in reality, she was out, crashing college parties. That was where Sheldon accidentally bumped into her while the boy genius was looking after Paige. This is a side of Missy that has never been shown in Young Sheldon before. While she has lied in the past, her latest fib was not only bold, but it was also stupid as it endangered her. This could be the start of a pattern that ultimately spells Missy's tragic The Big Bang Theory situation.
Unlike Sheldon who has a penchant for following rules, Missy is more adventurous in nature. She is willing to take risks and break the law, but nothing is out of the ordinary as an adolescent. This is why her Young Sheldon season 6 lie is so shockingly bold that it's likely motivated by what's happening in her family. Only she knows about her parents' potential affairs. She already confronted George about his secret meetings in the chicken coop, and while the Cooper patriarch denied it, Missy may have not bought his explanation.
Missy is also the only member of the Cooper family who knows about Mary's attraction to Pastor Rob. Whether the Cooper matriarch is still pining for her old co-worker is uncertain, but that doesn't negate the detrimental impact on their clan if it comes out in the open. While Missy already confronted George about his possible affair, making Sheldon's regret in The Big Bang Theory worse.
It's uncertain if this will be Missy's general attitude moving forward.
However, in the event that this will be her norm moving forward despite the chastising she received from her parents, this could be Young Sheldon's way of setting up her future story as revealed in the nerd-centric sitcom. Admittedly, it's heartbreaking to see her go through this difficult patch knowing that it will only get worse with George's impending death in Young Sheldon, but CBS doesn't have any choice at this point but to follow the established The Big Bang Theory canon.
