Original Penny Actor Opens Up About Being Cut From The Show..

Amanda Walsh, the original female lead of The Big Bang Theory, has opened up about being cut from the show. In the original pilot, Walsh played the character Katie alongside Jim Parsons' Sheldon and Johnny Galecki's Leonard. However, after CBS asked creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady to retool the series, the character of Katie was scrapped and replaced by Kaley Cuoco's Penny.

Walsh reflects on her experience of being cut from the show in Jessica Radloff's book, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story Of The Epic Hit Series. She recounts the moment she received the phone call informing her that the show was being retooled without her character. While it was a disappointment, Walsh appreciated that Prady handled the situation with kindness and understanding.

Fortunately for Walsh, she was later hired for another pilot called The Mastersons of Manhattan, which validated her talent and helped alleviate any doubts she had about her abilities as an actor. She has also been brought in for other projects by Chuck Lorre, and the show's producers have expressed that Lorre is a fan of hers, which has been reassuring.

Walsh acknowledges that time is the best remedy for such disappointments and leaned on friends who had experienced similar situations in Los Angeles for support.

The decision to cut Walsh's character, Katie, from The Big Bang Theory was not a reflection of her performance. Both Prady and Lorre have spoken highly of her portrayal. However, the character itself did not fit well within the dynamics of the show. Unlike Penny, Katie was portrayed as more worldly and could be rude and harsh towards Sheldon and Leonard. This clashed with the empathetic nature of the main characters that CBS wanted to see in the show.

While it's challenging to imagine the show without Kaley Cuoco's Penny, the replacement of Katie with Penny allowed for a fresh start. The character of Penny became the main female lead and brought a more understanding and warm-hearted nature to the show, serving as the viewers' perspective in the narrative.

It's worth noting that Walsh was not the only actor cut from The Big Bang Theory following the pilot. Iris Bahr, who played Gilda, another female scientist character, was also scrapped and replaced by Simon Helberg's Howard and Kunal Nayyar's Raj. However, Bahr has yet to comment on her experience.
