Cat has unexpected reaction to noticing his reflection for the first time
After living for five years, one may assume that cats have already discovered everything there is to know. However, a cat named Butters has proven that he is still uncovering new things, even about himself, at this point in his life. Butters resided in Alaska with his owner, Connor Robinson. It wasn't until April 13 that this 5-year-old feline realized that the creature in the mirror was actually his own reflection. Surprisingly, Butters began growling and hissing at himself, much to Robinson's shock. The owner had adopted Butters as a kitten and had previously shown him to the mirror, but the cat had never reacted before.
Robinson documented Butters' unusual behavior in a TikTok video shared on the @crobsauce account with the caption: "In this episode of weird cat behavior: Butters woke up today and noticed his reflection for the first time ever after 5 years of life." Concerned about Butters' newfound aggression towards his own reflection, Robinson consulted a vet who explained that it was a typical feline reaction. The vet suggested that the recent switch in cat litter could have triggered Butters' anger. To prevent any harm, Robinson covered the mirrors with towels to prevent Butters from seeing himself. Fortunately, the hissing and growling have decreased over time.
Although Butters still grumbles as he passes his reflection, he no longer stops to hiss at himself. The TikTok video of Butters discovering his reflection garnered over 2.3 million views, 400,000 likes, and 2,099 comments by Thursday. Viewers shared their own humorous experiences with their pets reacting to mirrors, with one joking, "I have the exact same reaction in the morning," and another adding, "I don't like what I see in the mirror either Butters." Some users also shared their cats' similar encounters with reflections, noting that their pets eventually calmed down.
