Jujutsu Kaisen is a hugely popular anime series, recently breaking a Guiness World Record. Despite its success, it was surprisingly beaten by Fruits Basket in a Barnes and Noble fan poll. Fruits Basket's victory highlights the underappreciated genre of shojo, which focuses on romantic plots and slice-of-life moments targeted at young women. Fruits Basket tells the story of Tohru Honda, who helps the Somas break free from a curse that turns them into animals when hugged. The series, known for its lighthearted tone, also delves into profound themes like self-acceptance and coping with abuse. Shojo anime and manga, including titles like Ouran High School Host Club and Kamisama Kiss, are gaining recognition and appreciation, thanks in part to Fruits Basket's win. Both Fruits Basket and Jujutsu Kaisen are available for streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll, respectively.
