The creators of The Wire, David Simon and George Pelecanos, are returning to Baltimore with their new HBO limited series, We Own This City.

The show is based on a book by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton and focuses on police corruption in the aftermath of Freddie Gray's death, a case that ignited protests for justice. The series examines the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force, exploring how corruption has developed in response to the War on Drugs.

The teaser for We Own This City features Jon Bernthal as a cop named Wayne Jenkins, who poses a hypothetical question about stealing money from drug dealers.

The teaser also includes Treat Williams' character explaining how the crackdown on drugs led to police militarization and the violation of citizens' rights.

Darrell Britt-Gibson appears as a conflicted police officer, struggling to maintain his integrity among corrupt colleagues. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who previously worked with Bernthal in the film King Richard, the series consists of six episodes. Bernthal praises Simon's commitment to journalistic truth and describes him as a hero.

He emphasizes the importance of exploring the intersection of police and race, particularly within the context of Baltimore.

Bernthal believes that Simon and Pelecanos are national treasures for their dedication to shedding light on these issues. In We Own This City, Simon and Pelecanos continue their examination of corruption within the Baltimore police force, a theme they previously explored in The Wire.

The series promises to delve into the complex dynamics between law enforcement, the War on Drugs, and systemic injustice. With its focus on a real-life case and the aftermath of public demands for justice, We Own This City offers a compelling and timely narrative.
