Matt Donovan was a part of for the show's entirety, but there are things about his character that audiences hated. had several supporting characters that were not received well, to say the least. For instance, Elena Gilbert was the character that audiences loved to hate, but Matt is a close second. That's not to say that there was nothing good about him. Matt was loyal, kind, and tried to be a good friend. The fact that he deeply cared about is what endeared the other characters on the show to him and is probably why they always saved him.

Matt was the only of the main who remained human until the show ended in its eighth season.

His humanity and the love that he had for the people of Mystic Falls made him relatable. However, Matt also had characteristics that made everyone hate him. He was judgmental, prejudiced, and the weak link of the group. Despite being in for so long, his character lacked direction, making his presence on the show irrelevant. In ' later seasons, Matt's good-guy persona was replaced by a ruthless side that made him even more unlikeable than he already was.

10 Matt Had A Boring And Bland Personality

In earlier seasons of , Matt played the role of the high school jock who falls in love with a cheerleader. This character troupe commonly used in teenage dramas might have been his downfall. During the show's duration, nothing was interesting about him. He often came off as bland and boring, making it harder to like his character. Additionally, Matt was reserved and rarely spoke out about how he felt. Ultimately, Matt was a character in that was just there. He did not add any element of excitement to the show.

9 Matt Was A Hypocrite

Throughout all eight seasons of , Matt made no secret of his hatred for vampires. He acted like he was the only one in Mystic Falls with a good moral compass. Despite all his preaching about how terrible the vampires were, he had no qualms about using them. When he was on the brink of death, he fed on vampire blood numerous times and also went to Europe with Rebekah. He often judged Elena for being with Stefan, but that didn't stop him from having a short-lived romance with Rebekah.

8 Matt Hated Vampires

Matt Donovan's hatred for vampires is one of the worst-received things about the character. Damon turned his sister Vicki into a vampire and was later killed by Stefan, so his hatred was justified. However, his dislike for vampires bordered on being irrational, mainly because the vampires he hated so much often came to his aid whenever he was in trouble. After Matt discovered that Caroline was a vampire, he ended their relationship despite Caroline being among the few people in Mystic Falls who cared about him.

Matt perceived every vampire as a monster, while he saw himself as the good guy because he was human.

That's not to say that the vampires in Mystic Falls were saints, but his overt hatred for them was sometimes uncalled for. His prejudice made him ruthless, and he tortured Stefan and Damon even though they had been integral in keeping him alive. Matt blamed vampires for anything wrong with his life. He spent most of season 7 hunting down Stefan because he blamed him for his fiancee's death when he was the one who killed her.

7 Matt Had A Savior Complex

Unlike most of the characters in

, Matt had no supernatural powers. However, that did not stop him from trying to save the day. Ultimately, all his savior complex did was make things worse for everyone and put people in danger. To his credit, he did become the town sheriff in hopes of helping people. The show's writers could have capitalized on his need to save everyone by at least turning him into a vampire hunter like Jeremy or maybe having him team up with the villains so that he could hunt down vampires.

6 Matt Always Needed To Be Saved

No one in probably needed to be saved as much as Matt Donovan. Even though he had no supernatural powers, he often mouthed off to characters who were much more powerful than him. He was constantly saved by Bonnie, Elena, Stefan, and even Damon, who would have much rather killed him. One of the reasons he stayed alive for so long was because there was always someone there to save him when he got involved in things that were none of his concern.

5 Matt Was A Cry Baby

Initially, it seemed like Elena Gilbert was the one who always cried on

, but Matt takes the cake as the biggest crybaby on the show. That's not to say that he didn't have anything to cry about, he did. However, his constant crying whenever anything went wrong made him seem immature and unlikable. Bad things had happened to everyone in Mystic Falls, but not everyone (maybe except Elena) was crying at the drop of a hat. The show's creators could have turned him into a crybaby to humanize him more, but it had the opposite effect.

4 Matt Had No Direction In The Show

In season 1 of , Matt was one of the main characters who had no clue about the supernatural creatures that had made their home in his beloved town. So, for a while, that made his character interesting. Matt struggled to find his identity on the show. It seemed like he was just there because he was the only human main character. He eventually found his purpose in season 7 when he decided to help Rayna Cruz hunt down Stefan and get rid of the vampires in Mystic Falls, but by then, he had already outlived his usefulness.

3 Matt Was Mean To The People Who Cared About Him

After Matt found out that his friends were vampires, he decided to keep his distance from them. He was often mean to Caroline, Rebekah, Stefan, and Elena, even though Elena died to keep him alive. His prejudice against vampires made him blind to how much his friends cared about him. The fact that he was always judgmental and snubbing the people who, on numerous occasions, had put their lives on the line to protect him made it hard to like him.

2 Matt Was Constantly Complaining

Matt's woe-is-me attitude in was exasperating. His constant complaining and blaming anything wrong that happened in Mystic Falls on vampires was exhausting. His complaining got so bad at one point that it was a wonder why he didn't leave Mystic Falls if he hated everything that much. Matt could have better used his talents elsewhere other than drowning in self-hatred. He always viewed himself as the victim but never took the time to consider that he had also hurt the people who cared about him.

1 Matt Survived Despite Having No Powers

killed off characters that were more interesting and saved a greater purpose than Matt in the show. The fact that so many characters like Lexi, Kol, and Bonnie had died, but Matt was alive for eight seasons strains incredulity. There was nothing remotely special about Matt, yet he still survived. Granted, it was primarily because of Elena and that made him stay alive for as long as he had. If Elena were not determined to keep him alive, Damon would have never bothered to protect him. Matt would have probably been dead in season 3.
