Sure, Mariska Hargitay's famous for her signature role of no-nonsense Detective Olivia Benson on NBC's Law & Order: SVU, but get her talking about her kids, and she melts into a real softie.
Hargitay, appearing on Wednesday's edition of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, opens up about the heartwarming story of how she and hubby Peter Hermann adopted their babies Amaya and Andrew, and RadarOnline.com has your sneak peek.
"We got a call out of nowhere from our lawyer who said, 'We have this amazing little boy and this amazing opportunity,'" said Mariska, the daughter of legendary actress Jayne Mansfield.
"It was just one of those things that we were not expecting at all, and my husband and I looked at each other and have never been more sure about anything and knew it was just right."
Ellen asked her, "So between the call that you get, and the time the baby came to your house?"
"Well, with my son it was a different story," Mariska explained. "It was very different with my son it all happened very quickly and that's not usually how it happens. I would say usually, adopting a child takes the same about of time it takes for a baby to grow in your belly.
"With Amaya it took months and months and with Andrew it was -- truth be told, it was two days."
Mariska said welcoming the 2-month-old Andrew in addition to her 6-month-old Amaya was "nothing shy of a miracle."
Welling up, Mariska said, "This year has been a year of true blessings -- way to make me cry Ellen!"
"I don't want to make you cry," Ellen said. "I want to make you smile and laugh!"
