Matthew Perry honored at Emmys with emotional ‘Friends’ theme song during in memoriam

Stars gathered at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles for the 2024 Emmy Awards to pay tribute to the losses suffered by the Hollywood community in the past year. Charlie Puth led the tribute and sang a moving rendition of the "Friends" theme song. Matthew Perry, who died on Oct. 28 at the age of 54, was remembered in the emotional in-memoriam segment. The late actor died from an overdose of ketamine, with contributing factors of drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine. Perry was found unresponsive and submerged in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Other stars who passed away in 2023 include Paul Reubens, Treat Williams, Jerry Springer, Ryan O'Neal, and Norman Lear. The Television Academy honored several other stars during the ceremony, including Suzanne Somers, John Beasley, Andre Braugher, Leslie Jordan, Len Goodman, Cindy Williams, and Bob Barker. The awards show also paid tribute to Angus Cloud, Barbara Walters, Tommy Smothers, Kirstie Alley, and Stephen "tWitch" Boss.
