Questionable Things We Ignore In NCIS
2023/06/14
"NCIS" faced backlash over its portrayal of women, particularly through the character of DiNozzo. The show's earlier seasons depicted women in stereotypical roles, but later seasons shifted towards giving them more depth. In an episode where Gibbs and Agent Todd board a submarine to solve a case, we see examples of the U.S. Navy's discrimination against women on submarines. Until 2010, the Navy excluded women from serving on submarines, which made accommodations for women on subs nonexistent. DiNozzo also engages in inappropriate behavior towards women, such as asking out a nurse while on the job and stealing a female colleague's birth control pills. Despite some dramatizations, the show accurately reflects the real-life NCIS's role in criminal investigations and the accuracy of life on U.S. Naval nuclear submarines.
